![]() WHY LEAVE HOME? (Comedy | Music) [1 hour 10 minutes] Dixie Lee, best known to latter-day viewers as the first wife of Bing Crosby, essayed a leading role in the early Fox talkie Why Leave Home?. Things get under way when suburban matrons Ethel (Ilka Chase), Susan (Dot Farley) and Maude (Laura Hamilton) discover that their husbands George (Jed Prouty), Elmer (Walter Catlett) and Roy (Gordon DeMain) have been "stepping out" with some chorus girls. To get even, the ladies hire college boys Jose (Richard Keene), Oscar (David Rollins) and Dick (Nick Stuart) as their "gigolos." Caught in the middle are the collegiates' showgirl sweethearts Billie (Dixie Lee), Jackie (Jean Barry) and Mary (Sue Carol). Inevitably, all fifteen protagonists meet at a nightclub, leading to a cascade of slapstick complications. ===== A remake of 1928's The Cradle Snatchers, Why Leave Home? was itself remade as Let's Face It in 1943. |

SONG OF LOVE (Musical) [1 hour 22 minutes] Although forgotten today, Broadway chanteuse Belle Baker was important enough for Columbia Pictures to herald her much anticipated screen debut as "An event as important as the coming of sound," The frumpish Miss Baker slimmed down a bit for the occasion and was filmed as glamorously as possible by the little studio's ace cameraman Joseph Walker. A typical backstage melodrama, The Song of Love presented Baker and Ralph Graves as a married vaudeville act. She, however, retires to raise their son (David Durand and Graves falls prey to a predatory vamp (Eunice Quedens). Baker, meanwhile, scores with a hit song and little David works overtime to reunite his parents. Although the plot was as creaky as they came, The Song of Love was saved by Baker's contralto voice in such numbers as Bernie Grossman's torchy I'll Still Go On Wanting You and the bouncy I'm Walking With the Moonbeams (Talking to the Stars) by Mack Gordon, Max Rich and Maurice Abrahams. Aside from its leading lady, The Song of Love also proved the screen debut of Miss Quedens, who is better remembered today as the quick-witted Eve Arden, and marked the Columbia debut of sound-technician and future Three Stooges director Edward Bernds. |

![]() SHOW OF SHOWS (Musical) [2 hour 8 minutes] It's 1929. The studio gave the cinema its voice and offered the audiences a chance to see their favorite actors and actresses from the silent screen era. For the first time, they can be heard in a gaudy, grandiose music comedy revue. But also appearing are actors and actresses from the first 'talkies', stars from Broadway, and, of course, the German shepherd Rin-Tin-Tin. Frank Fay is the host of the more than 70 well-known stars who show various acts. |

THE BATTLE OF PARIS (Musical) [1 hour 20 minutes] The great British stage star Gertrude Lawrence was seldom seen to her best advantage in films. In Paramount's Battle of Paris, Lawrence stars as Georgie, a British singer stranded in not-so-gay Paree during WWI. To keep food on the table, Georgie teams up with amiable pickpocket Zizi (Charlie Ruggles). Among the pockets picked are those of handsome artist Tony (Walter Petrie), with whom Georgie falls in love. Hired as Tony's model, our heroine soon becomes the "poster girl" for the French and British armies, which somehow leads to a barrage of musical numbers by Cole Porter (his first direct-to-screen score). Gertrude Lawrence tries hard, but is defeated by a so-so script and surprisingly tepid music. |
